STATEMENT ON THE NOMINATION OF MIGUEL B. CARDONA AS U.S. SECRETARY OF EDUCATION

“We are excited to work with Dr. Miguel Cardona as the next U.S. Secretary of Education. He is not only a former teacher and principal, but a passionate champion for public schools and for our most underserved students. Having Dr. Cardona in the Secretary's office means that Latinx students see someone who looks like them as the top education leader in our country. That kind of representation is so important at a time when the majority of public school students are of color and nearly 5 million are English learners just like Dr. Cardona was. We look forward to working with Dr. Cardona to develop and enact federal policies that move our country closer to educational equity, especially for Black and brown students and those furthest from opportunity. To make this happen, we must prioritize investments in school leadership, including accelerating the diversity of education leaders at all levels.”
