Memphis City Schools

EPIC in Memphis is based on a strong collaboration between New Leaders, Memphis City Schools (MCS) and the Memphis Education Association. To date, EPIC has awarded approximately $4.3 million to more than 2,300 teachers, principals, instructional assistants and other instructional staff in 44 schools.

In MCS, a value-added metric using Tennessee state standardized test scores is used to determine which schools will be nominated for EPIC awards. After a school is nominated, the faculty and administrators eligible for EPIC awards must vote at a rate of 80 percent or higher in order to participate in the EPIC effective practice process and receive EPIC’s incentive awards.

All MCS educators have access to hundreds of effective practice resources on the web-based EPIC Knowledge System.

District of Columbia Public Schools

In the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), EPIC operates under the name TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More). The TEAM program has helped set a new standard for DC Public Schools by recognizing, rewarding, and retaining top performers. Over the four years of EPIC in DCPS, 24 schools have been recognized as TEAM award winners and more than 600 educators have received over $5 million in awards to recognize the extraordinary contribution of the entire staff of high-performing schools to the success of the District’s students.

As part of this innovation program, educators share the effective practices that helped lead to their gains with other school leaders and teachers across the city and the nation. All DCPS educators have access to hundreds of these effective practice resources on the web-based EPIC Knowledge System.

TEAM award winners are selected from high-need schools in DCPS. The fourth round of award winners was identified based on student gains on the DC-CAS made between the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years in reading and math in all tested grades. Schools in this cohort were identified for TEAM awards based on their value-added student achievement relative to other schools in the district serving similar grades of students.
