Six Graduating Seniors Earn Gates Scholarship; 14 Receive Associate’s Degrees in GWU Program

Mayor Vincent C. Gray joined Acting Chancellor Kaya Henderson today in recognizing two special groups of DC Public Schools graduating seniors.

Six Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) and 14 George Washington University Early College Program participants were applauded at Mayor Gray’s weekly press briefing in recognition of their academic achievement.

Of the eight District of Columbia GMS selected, six hail from DC public schools:

- Kenrry Alvarado, Bell Multicultural High

- Barbara Leary, School Without Walls

- Samantha Dewar, Banneker Academic High

- Ubochioma Ukaegbu, Banneker Academic High

- Asia Goode, Duke Ellington School of Arts

- Andre Williams, Anacostia Senior High 

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program, the nation’s largest scholarship program, is awarding scholarships to 1,000 students this year to cover all their unmet needs through graduation.

“Winning a Gates Millennium Scholarship is an incredible honor and these students should be extremely proud of their accomplishments,” said Acting Chancellor Henderson. “This scholarship ranks our students among the top in the nation.”
