Aspiring Principals Program

Our Aspiring Principals Program is a one-year, intensive training program in which participants are prepared to become highly effective principals in Washington, D.C. The program starts with a four-week summer program, followed by year-long Residency training with a mentor principal, support from a leadership coach and weekly classes.  Following completion of the program, there is support through the Principal Institute — a rigorous professional learning community where New Leader Principals further hone their leadership skills.

New Leaders is accredited in Washington, D.C. by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) to provide principal certification to participants upon completion of the program.

Because closing the achievement gap is difficult work, we work closely with principals and administrators to build the capacity of their school leadership teams and promote the system-level policies and practices that allow our New Leaders to succeed.

Unique to the program in D.C., New Leader Resident Principals here participate in Performance Evaluation Meetings twice a year.  In these meetings, Residents have the opportunity to present their work to district and charter hiring authorities, receiving real-time feedback and face-time with potential employers — a significant advantage.

Eligibility

The majority of those admitted to our Aspiring Principals Program must first participate in and complete our Emerging Leaders Program (see above). If you are interested in applying to our Aspiring Principals program but are not currently located in the Washington, D.C. region, or are not currently in an instructional position, please contact Warren Palmer at wpalmer@newleaders.org.
