The Wasington, D.C. program has trained and supported more than 100 New Leaders who are driving results for more than 20,000 students in public and public charter schools in District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS).

This year many New Leader schools saw dramatic gains in student achievement. In a year when overall district proficiency levels dropped, it is a testament to the dedication of these New Leaders that they were able to lead their schools to such impressive gains. A large proportion of D.C. New Leaders serve in the highest need areas in the city, wards seven and eight.

Below are a few highlights from 2011

  • New Leader Principal Wanda Perez, supported by New Leader Assistant Principal Aaron Cuny, made dramatic combined gains in math and reading at DC Bilingual Public Charter. The school had a combined gain of 20 percentage points.
  • McKinley Technology High School was the fourth highest gaining high school in Washington D.C. in math and reading combined. The school had a combined gain of 27 percentage points.
  • At the end of Janeece Docal’s first year as principal of Powell Elementary School, 2009-2010, there was a 14% increase in reading; at the end of her second year, 2010-2011, there was a 16% increase in math.

  • The SEED School was the 11th highest combined gainer in Washington, D.C. in 2011. When New Leaders entered the school four years ago, math proficiency was at 47%, and has grown steadily since. Now 76% of the students are proficient in math, and the school had a combined gain of 22 percentage points in math and reading this year.

New Leaders also demonstrate strong gains year after year

  • Led by New Leaders since 2005, proficiency levels at DC Preparatory Edgewood Middle School have grown from 43% to 75% in reading and 44% to 92% in math. Current New Leader Principal Katie Severn (Cohort 4) has led the school to 53 points combined gains and also served as a mentor principal to Cohort 10 Resident Rebecca Crouch.
