Emerging Leaders Program

The Emerging Leaders Program trains teachers, leaders, coaches, assistant principals and other leaders in instructional roles to develop and expand their leadership skills.

Participants take online and in-person courses (either after school and/or on weekends) in Personal Leadership, Instructional Leadership and School Culture Leadership. The course assignments are specific, job-embedded tasks that are designed to improve student achievement in real time. The program is free of charge. Those who excel in the Emerging Leaders Program will be given priority to enter our Aspiring Principals Program as Residents the following year.

Emerging Leaders Program nominations are now closed.

“Just talking about what other people are doing or not doing isn’t enough… you have to make the changes you want to see happen.”
Jacqueline Danvers Coombs, Cohort 9

Aspiring Principals Program

The Aspiring Principals Program focuses on four components: 1) selection based on the qualities and skills of successful principals; 2) year-long in-person and virtual training sessions led by national experts and local practitioners; 3) hands-on leadership experience through a school-based Residency, which includes one-to-one coaching; and 4) ongoing support and continuous learning from both a national community of almost 800 New Leaders and a local community of more than 120 New Leaders in New York City and Newark.

Our Residents demonstrate a relentless drive to transform public schools that prepare students for college and career success; a firm belief that effective leadership practices have a direct impact on student performance; instructional expertise and success in a K-12 classroom; exceptional leadership skills; and the perseverance to make a real difference in the lives of students in low-income communities.

Principal Institute

Through the Principal Institute, first-year principals (and second-year high school principals) learn from their local network of New Leaders, hone their leadership skills and work together to drive student achievement gains.

First-year principal support begins with entry planning, utilizing our diagnostic toolkit to assess the school and pinpoint key areas on which principals should focus. The entry planning process also includes the development of a data-driven, school-specific and detailed action plan for the school year.

Local groups meet monthly for several hours to learn particular skills, and participants also stay connected virtually and in person.
