We believe great schools start with great leaders. Because of this, New Leaders has partnered with the New York City public school system to recruit, train and support approximately 125 school leaders who have played an essential role in raising the bar on student achievement since 2001. With more than 1.1 million students in more than 1,700 schools, the New York City Department of Education is the largest public school system in the country.

New York City public schools serve a significantly larger and higher-need population than many other urban districts. Therefore, we are proud to have made an impact on this dynamic community, particularly since our mission is to ensure high academic achievement for all students, especially students in poverty and students of color.

New York City has made measurable progress in the last 10 years. However, many children in our schools have not attained proficiency in mathematics and English language arts, and too many high school students do not make it to graduation or do not graduate ready for college and career. New Leaders is committed to supporting the New York City Department of Education in addressing this challenge. The following links can provide you with additional context on public education in New York City:

New Leaders is proud to have Capital One Bank as one of its largest corporate partners in the greater New York metro area. Across the communities it serves, Capital One Bank invests in education to expand opportunities for youth from preschool through college. In addition to funding organizations like New Leaders, the Bank offers a range of free educational programs and resources which our local New Leader Principals and many other educators across the country use in their schools. These resources include:

  • Capital One/Junior Achievement Virtual Finance Park, an online financial education program that teaches middle school students about money management.
  • MoneyWi$e, a financial education program, featuring multilingual materials and community-based trainings.
  • BankIt, a web-based curriculum that teaches individuals of all ages to make positive choices about money.

The Newark Public Schools (NPS) district’s mission is to develop a productive citizen who is distinguished in all aspects of academic endeavors and willing to challenge the status quo in our society. New Leaders is committed to partnering with NPS to attain their mission of ensuring that policies and practices prepare students for a world that is increasingly diverse and knowledge driven.

This year we are launching the Emerging Leaders Program to cultivate and develop a pipeline of school leaders within Newark Public Schools. In partnership with New Leaders, the district will offer a select group of promising educators the opportunity to build their leadership skills to drive dramatic student achievement gains for all students in Newark.  Through this year-long, job-embedded professional development program, Emerging Leaders will participate in a combination of face-to-face and online sessions and then apply the knowledge and skills they learn at their schools.
