Since 2007, New Leaders have been key players in the effort to transform schools in New Orleans. Schools led by New Leaders have consistently been among the top-gaining schools in the city, and the past school year was no exception.

In 2011, New Leaders led eight K-8 schools in New Orleans. Five of those schools made double-digit gains, with three schools gained more than 20 percentage points.

Even more importantly, data shows that schools led by New Leaders for two or more years far outperform Louisiana schools, gaining an average of 13 percentage points per year in moving students to proficiency in math and reading compared to 4 percentage points for all Louisiana schools.

School Results

  • A team of New Leaders at Batiste Cultural Arts Academy drove dramatic results for students in their building last year, gaining 28 points in math and reading proficiency. There are also 31 percent fewer students at the lowest proficiency level now. The success of the students at Batiste has made the school the fourth highest gaining school in New Orleans in 2011, with the third highest jump in reading scores.
  • Team-leading transforms.  Last year a team of New Leaders led Scitech Academy to gain 29 points in math and reading combined. The school was the second highest gainer in math and the third highest gainer overall in New Orleans. Read more about Heather Lechner, principal of grades 6-8>>
  • Between 2008 and 2011 Arthur Ashe Charter School, led by New Leaders Aqua Stovall (Cohort 7) and Sabrina Pence (Cohort 8), has averaged an annual proficiency gain of 18 percentage points in math and reading combined. Read more about Aqua Stovall>>
  • In Jefferson Parish, first-year New Leader principal Janet McLoughlin (Cohort 9) outperformed both Jefferson Parish and the state, leading McDonogh 26 Elementary School to gain 9 percentage points in math and reading combined.
